Clariant set to beat Q3 FY 03 sales forecast

Clariant expects to beat ’03 operating results this year, helped by cost cuts and rising demand in most of its markets, the specialty chemicals firm said on Tuesday, as it reported solid growth in third-quarter sales.

The maker of pigments used to colour everything from jeans to cars said it expected ’04 continuing sales and operating income — excluding restructuring costs — above last year’s levels, underlining the effects of a sector recovery and its restructuring programme.

In the third quarter alone, operating profit came in at a lower-than-expected 130m Swiss francs ($109m) from a restated 135m a year ago, even though analysts said the core units appeared to be on track.

100 000 Euro für teutolabs Chemie

Seit der Gründung des teutolabs CHEMIE im Jahr 2000, dem dann die Labors für Physik und Mathematik folgten, haben mehr als 12 000 Kinder und Jugendliche die Möglichkeit genutzt, in der Universität Bielefeld unter fachkundiger Anleitung naturwissenschaftliche und mathematische Experimente durchzuführen. Die Resonanz ist so groß, dass die interessierten Schulklassen erhebliche Wartezeiten einkalkulieren müssen. Für die Chemie existiert daher inzwischen ein Netzwerk mit kleinen “Filialen” des Uni-teutolabs an zahlreichen Schulen. Darüber hinaus finden in diesem Fach inzwischen in großem Umfang Lehrerfortbildungen zur anschaulichen Gestaltung des naturwissenschaftlichen Unterrichts statt. Eine enge Verflechtung mit Schulen der Region ergibt sich durch die Teilabordnung von Lehrern, die den Laborbetrieb (gerade hinsichtlich der didaktischen Aufbereitung) wesentlich mitbestimmen. Zahlreiche studentische Hilfskräfte – oft Lehramtsstudierende – vervollständigen die Labor-Teams und können dabei wertvolle Erfahrungen im Umgang mit Schülern sammeln. Ziel der teutolabs ist es, durch spannende Experimente schon früh (im Grundschulalter) Interesse für die naturwissenschaftlichen Fächer und Mathematik zu wecken. Besonders Chemie und Physik leiden seit Jahren bundesweit unter niedrigen Studierendenzahlen. Nicht zuletzt durch die Erfolge der von Experten als in Deutschland führend angesehenen Bielefelder Labors gibt es inzwischen zahlreiche Nachahmungen an anderen Universitätsstandorten.

Aus Schwächen Stärken machen die Hochschule Niederrhein und der Verband der deutschen Lackindustrie mit einem in Deutschland einmaligen Modell: der kooperativen Ausbildung zum Lackingenieur in einem Bachelor-Studiengang. Er soll der Lackindustrie den dringend benötigten qualifizierten Nachwuchs sichern und für die Fachhochschule den Praxisbezug des Studiums erhalten. Wer nach vier Jahren als Lacklaborant und Lackingenieur mit Bachelor-Abschluss ins Berufsleben tritt, hat gegenüber “normaler” Ausbildung und Studium eineinhalb Jahre eingespart.

Chemie schafft neue Strukturen

“Chemie schafft neue Strukturen” – unter diesem Motto wird die Jahrestagung der Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh), die bedeutendste chemiewissenschaftliche Tagung im deutschsprachigen Raum des kommenden Jahres, vom 11. bis 14. September 2005 in Düsseldorf stattfinden. Im Novemberheft der “Nachrichten aus der Chemie” veröffentlichte jetzt die GDCh erste Informationen dazu. Zeitgleich erschien das GDCh-Fortbildungsprogramm 2005 mit über 70 Veranstaltungen. Die GDCh appelliert an die Chemikerinnen und Chemiker in Deutschland, das Tagungs- und Weiterbildungsangebot zu nutzen, um mit den aktuellen Entwicklungen Schritt zu halten und die Innovationskraft der deutschen Chemie zu sichern.

Die Jahrestagung in Düsseldorf wird die Breite der molekularen Wissenschaften und die Dynamik der Wissenschaft Chemie widerspiegeln. Fast alle der 24 GDCh-Fachgruppen, von der Angewandten Elektrochemie bis zur Wasserchemischen Gesellschaft, bringen sich in die Tagung ein, was dem Chemiker einen einmaligen Überblick über aktuelle Entwicklungen in der Chemie verschafft. Die Tagung wird von einer Firmenausstellung begleitet. Es wird ein attraktives kulturelles Rahmenprogramm geboten.

Better Chemistry Between the Government and the Chemical Industry

The Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of

the Environment called today on the chemical industry to work more closely

with government to achieve the goals set out in the Government of Canada’s

Speech from the Throne and to help meet the challenge of competitiveness and

environmental sustainability.

In a speech to the Canadian Chemical Producers Association meeting in

Ottawa, Minister Dion noted that chemical producers have made impressive

progress with their initiatives to voluntarily reduce the release of toxic

substances that can pose a risk to human health and the environment, but that

more work by both the industry and the government is needed.

According to Minister Dion, “Government will continue to assess risks

based on sound science, and industry must play its role by bringing forward

the scientific information on the chemicals it produces. Such partnerships are

vital to the development of optimal science and technology, and, using our

ingenuity, we can ensure that safer chemicals are developed and marketed.”

The need to continually improve performance is behind the most recent

Speech from the Throne commitment to develop and implement policies that

systematically integrate sustainable development into the government’s

decision making. Further, the government will ensure that Canadians are kept

better informed.

“We intend to intensify our efforts to constantly improve the information

we provide to Canadians about the risks relating to chemical substances and

the actions that governments, industry and individuals must take to reduce

these risks,” added the Minister.

The integration of sustainable development into decision making will be

carried out under a new framework for competitiveness and environmental

sustainability supported by five pillars:

– a better decision-making process engaging all sectors of society;

– better science to foster the effective development of policies and

technologies;

– better information on environmental indicators, including risks,

posed by existing and new chemicals;

– a clear and effective system of incentives and penalties; and

– better public education.

BU chemist to map DNA’s surface

In a second round of funding for technology-related research that will contribute to the international research effort known as ENCODE, the National Human Genome Research Initiative (NHGRI) is supporting a Boston University-based effort to map the topography of the DNA molecule. Prof. Thomas Tullius, chairman of Boston University’s Department of Chemistry, has received a three-year, $870,000 NHGRI grant to map the bumps, dips, and turns that characterize the surface of “naked” DNA.

Tullius’s research will give scientists a finely detailed picture of how the most fundamental aspects of naked DNA — DNA without proteins bound to its surface — influence its function
