The Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index rose 0.9 percent to 261.92, bringing last week’s gain to 2.7 percent. The Stoxx 50 advanced 1 percent to 2873.96 and the Euro Stoxx 50, a benchmark for the 12 countries using the euro, added 0.9 percent to 3037.13.

ABN Amro Holding NV (AABA NA): The biggest Dutch bank may say fourth-quarter profit increased 34 percent to 1.15 billion euros ($1.49 billion) from a year earlier, based on the median estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News, as ABN Amro company booked a gain from the sale of its car-leasing business and set aside less money to cover risky loans. The stock lost 14 cents, or 0.7 percent, to 20.83 euros.

BASF und ihre Mitarbeiter weltweit spenden 3,8 Millionen Euro für Flutopfer in A

Die Mitarbeiter und Mitarbeiterinnen der BASF weltweit haben bis zum 31. Januar 2005 über 1,4 Millionen Euro für die Opfer der Flutkatastrophe in Asien gespendet. Dieser Betrag wird von der BASF verdoppelt. Hinzu kommt eine Million Euro Soforthilfe, die das Unternehmen unmittelbar nach der Naturkatastrophe zugesagt hat. Das bedeutet ein Gesamtspendenvolumen von 3,8 Millionen Euro. Das Geld wird für kurz-, mittel- und langfristige Hilfsprojekte in Indonesien, Sri Lanka, Indien und Thailand eingesetzt.

BMBF unterstuetzt Neutronen-Computertomographie

Das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) unterstützt für 2,5 Jahre mit 307.0000 Euro auf dem Gebiet der Neutronen-Computertomographie (nCT) ein weiteres Forschungsvorhaben der Technischen Fachhochschule Berlin. Unter der Projektleitung von Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Treimer (Labor für bildgebende Verfahren am Fachbereich Mathematik – Physik – Chemie) wird in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Hahn-Meitner-Institut schon seit längerem auf dem Gebiet der Neutronen-Computertomographie geforscht. So konnten in den letzten Jahren innovative Verfahren für die Neutronen-Computertomographie entwickelt werden: Mit der neuen nCT-Technik wurde beispielsweise die Präsenz von sub-µm Teilchen nachgewiesen, obwohl die Nachweisgrenze für Neutronen um ein 1.000faches unterschritten ist. BASF acquires electronic chemicals business of Merck KGaA

BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Ludwigshafen, today acquired the global electronic chemicals business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt. The purchase price is €270 million. The transaction is still subject to approval by the regulatory authorities. Closing is expected in the second quarter of 2005.

In the first nine months of 2004, Merck increased global sales at its electronic chemicals business by 16 percent to €155 million. The business currently has about 600 employees.
