The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2003

All living matter is made up of cells. A single human being has as many as the stars in a galaxy, about one hundred thousand million. The various cells – e.g. muscle cells, kidney cells and nerve cells – act together in an intricate system in each one of us. Through pioneering discoveries concerning the water and ion channels of cells, this year’s Nobel Laureates Peter Agre and Roderick MacKinnon, have contributed to fundamental chemical knowledge on how cells function. They have opened our eyes to a fantastic family of molecular machines: channels, gates and valves all of which are needed for the cell to function.

FIZ CHEMIE Search Engines also ply through the Web’s hidden secrets

Berlin, October 2003 – With every new server appearing in the Internet, more information disappears into the so-called “deep”, or “hidden” Web. This concealed part of the Internet contains those Web pages which are not accessed, for whatever reason, by normal search engines. Quite often however, in scientific circles it is exactly those Web pages which contain the really interesting information from universities and research institutes. Germany’s “Chemistry Information Centre” (Fachinformationszentrum Chemie, FIZ CHEMIE Berlin) now has tools to tackle the problem of the hidden Web: its subject-specific Internet search engines “ChemGuide” (chemistry), “MedPharmGuide” (medicine and pharmacology) and “PublishersGuide” (scientific publishers). These powerful search engines access more than 7000 servers and thoroughly search these down to the last published page. All entry pages found by the “Guides” are evaluated by FIZ CHEMIE Berlin for their relevance. With a single search query in one of these engines, one can thus search thousands of servers with approximately 15 million Web pages.

Junge Chemie-Informations-Forscher ausgezeichnet

Berlin/München, 7. Oktober 2003 – Der Chemiker Dr. Frank Oellien und die Informatikerin Gabriele Vierhuff sind die Gewinner der diesjährigen FIZ CHEMIE Berlin-Preise. Die Auszeichnungen werden einmal im Jahr von der Fachgruppe “Chemie-Information-Computer” (CIC) in der Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh) für jeweils eine herausragende Dissertation und eine herausragende Diplomarbeit auf dem Gebiet der Chemo-Informatik vergeben. Oellien erhält den Preis für seine Doktorarbeit “Algorithmen und Applikationen zur interaktiven Visualisierung und Analyse chemiespezifischer Datensätze”. Vierhuff gewann mit ihrer Diplomarbeit “Konzeption und Design eines Systems zur Anwendung von Struktur-Wirkungs-Beziehungen auf die Risikoanalyse von Umweltchemikalien”. Die Preise werden am 7. Oktober auf der GDCh-Jahrestagung in München überreicht.
